EXPLORE THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN RELIGION AND SLAVERY IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA OF THE ATLANTIC WORLD.
This website is a digital initiative to bring to light the role of religion in trans-Atlantic slavery. Using the essays and primary sources provided, you can explore the ways enslavers used religion to justify enslavement and the importance of religion in the daily lives of enslaved people as they were forcibly dispersed throughout the Americas.
Please be aware some of this site is still under construction. We need to add images, find additional primary sources, and create informational videos. These things take time and money. If you would like to get involved with this project, please contact Dr. Matthew Blake Strickland at:
Dr. Matthew Blake Strickland holds a PhD in history from the University of Florida. His research focuses on interactions between white Christian ministers and enslaved Black people. This project developed from a doctoral dissertation and a desire to use a digital humanities approach for analyzing religion and Atlantic slavery.
